Lesson 5: Coming Home

If a foreign colleague or acquaintance has helped look after you when visiting their country, it's important to know how to thank them politely. 

In this lesson, you will learn how to (レッスンの狙い):
1. Thank your hosts (お世話になった方に感謝を伝える)
2. Change your flight details (フライトの内容を変更する)
3. Check in at the airport (搭乗手続きをする)

Junko: Well, it has been a very useful trip.

David: Indeed, and thank you for coming. We enjoyed having you here.

本当ですね、わざわざお越しくださってありがとうございました。ご一緒できて。本当に楽しかったです。

Junko: Thank you for organizing everything and for looking after me.

いろいろお膳立てしてくださった上にすっかりお世話になりました。

David: It’s my pleasure. The team really needed you here in person.

どういたしまして。うちのチームはどうしてもあなたに直接お会いする必要があったのです。

Junko: Please congratulate everyone for me. I would also like to give you this small gift.

私のかわりに皆さんに宜しくお伝えください。ほんの気持ちばかりですが、これを差し上げます。

David: Wow, that is very nice of you. Can I open it?

うわあ、ご親切にどうも。開けてもいいですか。

Junko: Sure. They are hand-made fans with Japanese prints.

どうぞ。日本画の描かれた手作りの扇子です。

David: These are great! Thank you. Oh, and please send my regards to Saito-san in Marketing.

すばらしいですね。ありがとうございます。あ、それからマーケティング部の斉藤さんに宜しくお伝えください。

Junko: Hello. Can I check in for the Tokyo flight here?

すみません。ここで東京行きの便にチェックインしたいのですが。

Staff: Certainly. May I have your passport and ticket, please?

かしこまりました。パスポートとチケットを拝見できますか。

Junko: Here you go. Actually, I’d like to upgrade to first class.

どうぞ。実は座席をファーストクラスに変更したいのです。

Staff: That’s no problem. I can arrange that for you.

問題ございません。ご用意いたします。

Survivial English

Going abroad on a business trip or vacation is an excellent opportunity for you to practice your English skills and build confidence in your abilities. When you use English successfully to get something done, it can give you a great sense of accomplishment and can help keep you motivated to keep studying. When abroad, here are some situations you can get some invaluable practice:

At the Airport (Checking In for flights)

On an international airplane (Making requests to the flight attendant or making small talk with fellow passengers)

At a hotel (Checking in/out, asking questions about hotel services)

In a restaurant (Ordering food, asking about recommendations)

In a taxi (Giving directions, making smal talk)

In a shop (Asking about souvenirs)

There are lots more situations of course so be proactive and have a go!
